Social withdrawal, isolation, or a sense of being misunderstood may arise. Old relationships may no longer feel aligned.
-
You’re suddenly drawn to spiritual teachings, metaphysical ideas, or altered states of consciousness as you seek meaning.
-

-
You notice patterns, “downloads,” or meaningful coincidences that seem to reflect or guide your inner process.

Jen’s Story.
My Journey Through the Abyss
In 2017, after a profound psychedelic journey, I found myself unexpectedly plunged into a year-long descent into what can only be described as the existential void. I experienced intense confusion, derealization, anxiety, and the haunting sense that either I—or the world around me—wasn’t real. I wondered if I was the only “awake” person in a world full of unaware, autopilot robots. It was deeply isolating, and there were moments I feared I was going crazy.
At times, I worried that seeking clinical help would lead to being medicated or institutionalized. I only confided in one trusted friend, who listened with love but didn’t know how to help me. In my search for answers, I discovered the work of Stanislav Grof, particularly The Stormy Search for the Self and Spiritual Emergency. His words were life-changing. I realized that what I was experiencing wasn’t pathology—it was part of a documented, archetypal process of spiritual transformation.
Over time, I came to understand that this "descent"—so reminiscent of the Jungian underworld—is not the end, but a necessary passage. I faced my deepest fears around death and the unknown, and instead of seeking certainty, I began to rest in acceptance and curiosity. What emerged was a more grounded, peaceful version of myself than I had ever known.
This lived experience became one of the greatest gifts of my life—and it now informs how I support others through their own initiatory passages.
